Description

Guia Penin: 95/100

When to drink: 2016 to 2028

More pepper and spice and less ripe fruited on the nose than the 2012. Dark and savoury and coal-like. As with the 2012, almost bitter on the palate, like very dark chocolate, but the dry tannins leave your mouth feeling clean (the way dark chocolate does). Julia Harding MW

Aalto is the result of a partnership between Javier Zaccagnini and star winemaker Mariano García. Only Tempranillo grapes from eight different municipalities in the Ribera del Duero are processed at Aalto. Instead of relying on the interplay of different grape varieties when blending the wines, Don Mariano prepares up to 19 different Tempranillo lots for Aalto, which are only married together after ageing in barriques. This is the only way to explain the great depth and exemplary balance of this great Tempranillo personality. Aalto PS, the monumental top growth of the house, consists of a selection of the best plots and is not produced every year. PS matures only in new wood for 24-30 months. The grapes for the two wines come from 110 hectares of leased vineyards in the best locations in the region. It was only last year that the two partners began buying up small top vineyards on a very selective basis.
