Dark ruby garnet, good depth of colour, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Sweet, dark forest berry aromas, nuances of liquorice, a fine touch of precious wood, delicate hints of vanilla and cardamom, inviting bouquet. Texturally rich, complex texture, taut and with firm, still present tannins, dark nougat, well-integrated acid structure, tightly woven style, already very good grip, subtle sweetness in the finish, classic Masseto that will continue to grow over the coming years.

In contrast to the very late 2010 vintage, the hot and dry climate in 2011 was responsible for the exceptionally early grape harvest.
After a rainy winter, spring brought particularly warm temperatures, which shortened the growth cycle of the vines by a good 10 days. Budding was extremely rapid and even, a good sign for a great vintage. In June and July, growth was then slowed down by the cooler temperatures. The rains came at the right time after flowering and colour change and thus favoured optimal development of the berries, an ideal basis for aroma development and an exceptionally high polyphenol content. A heatwave at the end of August finally accelerated ripening to such an extent that the earliest harvest in the history of Masseto was recorded. The grapes were brought to the winery perfectly ripe and balanced without showing any signs of over-ripeness.

There are very few great wines in the world made from 100% Merlot. Masseto is one of them. Matured for 24 months in barriques and a further twelve months in the bottle. Concentrated bouquet, full mouthfeel - a mature wine in a class of its own.
Vinification
The Merlot grapes from the single vineyard Masseto are harvested by hand after rigorous quality selection in the vineyard, meticulously sorted and then fermented extremely carefully on the skins. This masterpiece matures for 24 months in barriques and a further 12 months in the bottle.
Tasting notes
Rich garnet colour with purple shimmer. Powerful bouquet of wild berries and noble precious woods, intense notes of ripe cherries, cassis, tobacco, chocolate, underpinned by hazelnut biscuits and fine spicy nuances. Juicy, full-bodied palate with a beautiful melting texture, ripe tannins, lots of sweet fruit extract, redcurrants and strawberries, also peppers and tobacco notes on the finish. Excellent balance, very elegant and wonderfully long.
