The winter was colder compared to the 1998 vintage, which resulted in delayed budding towards the end of March. Spring was characterised by average rainfall and temperatures. Flowering towards the end of May and vegetative growth were similar to 1998, with optimal climatic conditions during the flowering period resulting in above-average fruit set.
Due to the warm and dry summer, the extremely even colour change took place a week earlier than in previous years.
In mid-July, the excess berries were thinned out to ensure optimal ripening of the remaining grapes. The Merlot harvest took place in excellent weather in the second week of September. The harvest of the different plots was completed in 7 days. The grapes were harvested by hand in 15kg crates.

There are very few great wines in the world made from 100% Merlot. Masseto is one of them. Matured for 24 months in barriques and a further twelve months in the bottle. Concentrated bouquet, full mouthfeel - a mature wine in a class of its own.
Vinification
The Merlot grapes from the single vineyard Masseto are harvested by hand after rigorous quality selection in the vineyard, meticulously sorted and then fermented extremely carefully on the skins. This masterpiece matures for 24 months in barriques and a further 12 months in the bottle.
Tasting notes
Rich garnet colour with purple shimmer. Powerful bouquet of wild berries and noble precious woods, intense notes of ripe cherries, cassis, tobacco, chocolate, underpinned by hazelnut biscuits and fine spicy nuances. Juicy, full-bodied palate with a beautiful melting texture, ripe tannins, lots of sweet fruit extract, redcurrants and strawberries, also peppers and tobacco notes on the finish. Excellent balance, very elegant and wonderfully long.
