Served for dessert at a comprehensive 81 tasting in 1991: An elegant, long wine with hidden signs of botrytis. Certainly one of the best 81s, but I'd rather buy four bottles of Climens 1983 than one d'Yquem 1981. If I really have to rate it as a d'Yquem, then my rigour is (hopefully) understandable. It almost seems to me that such a juice should be synthetically constructible. A liqueur for not particularly discerning ladies. Once again, the rule of thumb is: "Better a small Sauternes from a big year than the other way round." A great wine for label drinkers. But only for this unfortunately not too rare species! 95: If I hadn't known a year later that it was a d'Yquem blind tasting, it could easily have been mistaken for a sweet Loire wine. Molasses on the nose, primroses, no botrytis. The sweetness outweighs the medium-length wine. 98: Develops a somewhat strawy colour. Open; first sherry and manzanilla tones. On the palate a note of rotten grass, not quite clean, not much fun and will develop (too) quickly.
