Valuation 19-20/20
53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 37 % Merlot, 9 % Cabernet Franc, 1 % Petit Verdot. 64 % Grand Vin. 45hl/ha. Dense purple with purple shimmer in the centre, fine ruby rim on the outside. Reserved bouquet, floral Cabernet notes, black peppercorns, Havana tobacco. Compact palate, red plum skins, a hint of dried fruit, dark wood, still mealy tannins, as always with very promising potential. Not a great communicator and therefore perhaps underestimated. It will only be able to prove its high score for the first time in 20 years. (19/20). 15: The bouquet was restrained and probably only showed about a third of the nasal flavours to be expected in its maturity. It tended towards truffles, liquorice and dark precious woods. What was particularly striking was its absolutely straightforward orientation.
A tannin monster on the palate, but with a certain initial charm. This is because the immense tannins are ripe. However, the wine itself is far from it. Anyone born in 1957 (Gabriel) or earlier should turn to other, older Montrose vintages. The chance of experiencing this incredibly ageable Saint-Estèphe-Deuxième in its full enjoyment phase seems to be rather small. And if one were to experience it after all, then perhaps the flattened taste buds would no longer be able to cope. At the moment it is still at 19/20, but 20/20 will probably be within reach in 20 years...
