Drink to maturity
Rating 17-18/20
A relatively light colour for a great vintage, brick-red rim. Chocolatey start, then earth-iron tones, old leather and camphor notes, pleasantly mature. Sinewy on the palate at first, still showing fine tannin muscles, which combine with the remaining astringency, the structure appears somewhat haggard. Not a chat lynch, but a food lynch. Is now at the cosy end of its maturity. (17/20). 18: Clearly mature, brightening wine red colour. Classic Lynch bouquet of the time, i.e. currants, horse saddle, earthy terroir notes and the impressions of artisanal vinification. There is a subtle dark raisiny sweetness on the second nose. Still firm on the palate, showing a well-supporting but not dominating acidity, it still has plenty of brute strength inside and ends with Brazil tobacco and black prunes. There is still no need to rush and it impressively documents the well-known ageing potential of this Cinquième Crus, which was still completely underestimated at the time. This bottle: 18/20.
