GOOD SWAP: A GABRIEL GOLD GLASS FOR A VERY LARGE SIP OF EXTREME

After the barrel tasting, Alfred Tesseron invited us to dinner in his kitchen. In the carafes, decanted shortly before; 1990, 1961 and 1945 Château Pontet-Canet. After the meal, this large balloon bottle (1.75 litres) of Cognac Tesseron Extreme suddenly appeared on the table. The base is a blend of very old cognacs, in which the individual components are at least 100 years old. This super-exclusive spirit is mainly available in England. So from CHF 3000 the Giga-Flacon. We got the Extreme for free. Beforehand, I had placed my Gabriel Gold glass in front of Alfred and he was completely fascinated and kept picking it up and comparing his wines with the GGG (Gabriel Gold glass) and his - admittedly very modest - Château glass. After we had savoured the tiny portion of Extreme, I gave him the gold glass I had brought with me, as I only had to taste a few barrel samples on the other. He thanked me with another, now much more generous ration of Extreme. That was a brilliant swap. Certainly for me...

65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot, 4 % Cabernet Franc, 1 % Petit Verdot. 30 hl/ah. Deep purple, rich in the centre, garnet shimmer on the rim. Shows a dark aroma in the restrained nose, tar nuances, mineral shimmer, ripe plums, truffles and a hint of Ripasso. No fruitiness, but rather a clear reference to its terroir. Fleshy on the palate, slightly crumbly extract, with a clearly profound aroma. A very baroque Pontet-Canet with plenty of substance and great potential. The assets are brilliant. However, it is introverted and (like other organic wines) not at all easy to taste. I would say that its impetuous power will ultimately be somewhat greater than its general class. I have to admit quite honestly that I reach my limits as a taster with this type of organic wine and have too little experience. So I was perhaps a little at a loss when I stood next to this wine. The same thing happened to me with the Palmer 2014 (also biodynamic).
