Description

Drinking maturity drink ( - 2038)
Valuation 19/20
Rich, medium garnet-ruby colour, brightening at the rim. Extremely spicy, but also almost extremely roasted bouquet, exotic woods, dried fruits, cedar scent, a hint of mint, cold fireplace and then finely fleshy wild notes, a very impulsive aroma, which practically increases every second. The certain vintage elegance is there. Nevertheless, it is clear that the vintage and the Pape are slightly below expectations. Not least because of its "semi-noble" tannins that linger on the tongue. Came off better with the public. For me, this time it is far behind the Mission and Haut-Brion, which is not always the case with the Pape. (19/20). 18: Incredibly dark colour, purple-black. The nose is characterised by very dark roasted tones reminiscent of coffee and pumpernickel, lots of currants but also cassis, blackberries and refreshing floral tones. Direct and offensive. Fleshy, full-bodied and very intense on the palate, the flavours are almost all in the black berry range, the finish turns to vanilla pods and liquorice, mixed with blackcurrant pastilles. A huge Pape that will catapult itself to the top elite in a few years. It seems to have survived the extreme vinification process and this may almost turn into an advantage for ageing. Tasted right next to the 2003 and 2009 vintages, this was the closest to a possible classic. Belongs to the giant papes of this era. (19/20).
