Drinking maturity drink ( - 2038)
Valuation 19/20
Rich, dark garnet-purple colour. Brilliant, intoxicating bouquet, lots of roasted flavours, but also clear nuances of precious woods, Earl Grey tea, candied cakes and soft, rich chocolate notes. You almost can't get enough of the flavour. Juicy on the palate, the tannins still have a very fine grain and thus support the mature astringency for years to come. The finish is beguiling and is reminiscent of a very specific wine: Mouton-Rothschild. So this would be an easy candidate to find in blind tastings. It is extremely easy to savour and yet I believe that it is not yet fully mature and will continue to improve. (19/20). 16: Medium-dark, gently maturing purple colour. Open bouquet, quite a lot of roasted notes, a hint of chocolate, but also spicy and perhaps slightly ripe fruit. On the palate, the wine is ripe with charm and fullness, aromatic finish. This was an amazingly mature bottle! I've had it much better. This bottle, at the Valandraud tasting: 18/20. 16: So it is. A very young, spicy, long-aromatic bottle at the Rütli tasting. This is how Mouton 2002 should be! It probably won't make it to 20/20, but at 19/20 it's one of the absolute best 2002s.
