Drinking maturity drink ( - 2030)
Valuation 19/20
Deep dark garnet colour. Delicate spicy bouquet, lots of cedar, a hint of black berries, plums, noble woods, quite accessible. Long, fine palate, blue to red berry notes, the tannins fine and yet still present, muscular, a ripe banana note in the finish, tastes so wonderfully like very good Bordeaux! 09: At the Gupf in Rehetobel. I whispered to the sommelier to decant a 99 Latour. But somehow he either understood the station or Lafite. So we ended up drinking this wine first. I would never have ordered it, because there had been too many negative experiences before. But the wine was fine and sweet and also soft with a wonderful, initial maturity. (18/20). 11: Magnum. Very dark colour. Bakelite notes, truffles, surprisingly deep, mocha touch, green-spicy Cabernet traces and also underlaid with lots of black pepper notes. Powerful stature with a still demanding, slightly grainy astringency, seems somehow illogically concentrated for this vintage. A brilliant, extremely young magnum. There have always been conflicting impressions of this Lafite vintage. This was one of the best so far. (18/20). 14: A fabulous bottle from Lucien Schmidlin with a view out to sea. Precious woods, cinnamon, candy sugar, caramel, fine pepper spice in the middle, still giving off primary flavours from the inside. This was my best bottle so far of this wine with its different flavours. This bottle: 19/20!
