89: Barrel tasting (17/20): Very rich in extract with cherry and plum flavours. More overall potential than Haut-Brion, velvety tannins. This was followed by a period of closure, whereby it did not show the grippy and mostly angular tannins of other great wines from the left bank of the Garonne. 98: Develops positively, harbours an astonishing meatiness and a lot of potential (decant for two hours). 06: Still quite deep and young colour, brightening rim. Dense, compact bouquet, showing tree nut shells, Havana tobacco and eucalyptus notes. Medium-bodied palate with muscle and residual tannins, gains weight with air and becomes a real Mission classic. It can still be found at reasonable prices at auction. (18/20). 12: Magnum. Medium-dark garnet colour, still youthful reflections. The nose is mineral, shows lots of fresh herbs, tar nuances, liquorice, quite complex, but not very dense. The palate is young, powerful, well muscled and shows a further, demanding astringency. Somehow it's just getting started and is worth buying for those who mourn the good old days. 12: I decanted it for an hour. Wonderfully spicy with lots of wild Cabernet Mission flavours. Not as bocky as it used to be. But still not fine either. A Mission doesn't have to be! 15: A magnum drunk with Res Jost in memory of our mutual friend Peter Bertschinger, who has passed away. The wine initially seems a little reserved and shows very slightly greenish Cabernet contours in the background, the tannins are uncharming and give the wine so much character. The flavour is classic and the wine tastes exactly like only a château with this flavour can: La Mission! 18: Magnum. Medium-dark wine red colour, clearly showing its maturity in the background. The bouquet begins earthy and I mean it. It begins with certain humus tones, is chocolaty, but unloads quite nicely. From this simple beginning, a mission develops that gets better and better, adding malt, herbs and other flavours reminiscent of tree nut shells, Peru balm and horse stables. On the palate it is juicy, elegant and has round tannins, the finish is pleasant, aromatic and long. It remains artisanal and still seems to have some reserves. This is not least because it continues to build even though it has been decanted.
