52 % Cabernet Franc, 48 % Merlot. 40 hl/ha. 70 % Grand Vin. Rich purple-garnet colour, dense in the centre, purple shimmer on the outside. Multi-layered bouquet, more spice than fruit, a clear indication of a wine based on great Cabernet Franc, ripe black plums, tobacco, dark malt, a hint of currants and tar, hints of truffles. Velvety on the palate, well-formed, quite lush tannins, already showing a lot of charm, the ripe acidity gives the body feminine contours in the finish, blueberries and elderberries, very long finish. A sublime, great Cheval Blanc that should not be underestimated. At 9 o'clock on a Monday morning, all was right with the world for me in the new Cheval Blanc cellar. The best Saint Emilion! 16: Drank during a visit to Cheval. Was totally impressed. The greatest thing about a Cheval is its flavour. And that's exactly what it has in spades. |
When to drink: 2023 to 2033
Falstaff: 95/100
Dark ruby-garnet colour, violet reflections, clear watery rim. Sweet spicy notes, black berry fruit, a hint of liquorice and blackberries, underlaid with wild berry jam, some cloves and floral notes with air. Complex, fine heart cherries, precise, silky tannins, finesse-rich structure, very elegant, extract-sweet finish, now more clearly characterised by Cabernet Franc, multi-layered, appears somewhat closed in this phase, not as open as half a year before. Now seems to have entered a longer dormant phase. Becomes more and more similar to the 2001 vintage.
